Quantcast GTO: Shonan 14 Days Marks Return of Great Teacher Onizuka

This year’s 27th issue of Kodansha‘s Weekly Shonen Magazine will announce on Wednesday that Tohru Fujisawa‘s Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) manga is returning under the name GTO: Shonan 14 Days. The Shōnan setting is the coastal bay area near Tokyo that is also the locale of Fujisawa’s Shonan Junai-gumi (GTO: The Early Years, pictured at right). Tokyopop released the original GTO manga and GTO: The Early Years, both of which recount the misadventures of Ekichi Onizuka, the biker gang member who becomes the “Greatest Teacher in the World.”

Since ending the first GTO manga, Fujisawa has been working on the Tokko, Rose Hip Rose, Animal Joe, and Unhappy! manga. Tokyopop licensed Tokko and Rose Hip Rose.

Angel Beats! Anime in Development

The new issue of Dengeki G’s Magazine has revealed that PC game developer Key is now at work on an original anime titled Angel Beats!. The battle action anime set in the afterlife will be written by Maeda Jun, scenario writer for PC games including Kanon, Air, and Clannad. Character design will be provided by Na-Ga, character designer on Key’s visual novel game Little Busters!

One Piece’s Newest Episode Leaked Before Japan’s Debut

An anonymous party discovered a copy of the One Piece anime’s episode 403 on a publicly accessible server of the anime distributor Funimation, and then illegally redistributed the episode — at least a full day before the episode premieres in Japan. The downloadable copy contains Funimation‘s logo and English subtitles. This episode was to have been the first episode simulcasted with English subtitles on Saturday, May 30 at 9:00 p.m. CDT on www.onepieceofficial.com. The episode was not supposed to premiere in Japan until Sunday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. (Saturday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. CDT).

Funimation has announced that One Piece videos are currently not available on its website due to technical issues. The company hopes to resolve the issues and bring back the streamed episodes.

Shoujo Manga Drama Announced

Naoko Matsuda’s 2007 manga series “Shoujo Manga” will serve as the basis for the NHK television network’s tentatively titled live action drama “Haken no Oscar ~ Shoujo Manga ni Ai wo Komete” (Oscar’s Order ~ From Shoujo Manga With Love). The drama will revolve around Katsuko, a young female office worker who imagines herself as a character within Ryoko Ikeda’s Rose of Versailles manga series. When her boss proposes drastic cost-cutting measures, Katsuko hears the voice of Lady Oscar, inspiring her to fight on behalf of the company’s employees. The 6 episode drama will premiere on August 28.

Saiyuki Reload to End in Japan, New Manga to Follow

The July issue of Ichijinsha‘s Monthly Comic Zero-Sum magazine has announced on Thursday that Kazuya Minekura will end her Saiyuki Reload manga in the next issue on June 28. However, in the same magazine, Minekura will launch a new story that will be the “final chapter” in the Saiyuki series. Minekura confirmed Saiyuki Reload‘s end and the final Saiyuki chapter’s plans in a Thursday entry to her official blog. The title, launch date, and other details of the new series will be announced in the next issue of Monthly Comic Zero-Sum.

Minekura already ended her Saiyuki Gaiden manga prequel in Ichijinsha‘s Zero-Sum Ward magazine earlier this month. Tokyopop has published the original Saiyuki manga and Saiyuki Reload in North America, and ADV Films and Geneon Entertainment (USA) have released their various television and film anime adaptations.

Last Week’s New Haruhi Episode Now Streaming on YouTube

The Kadokawa Group has begun streaming the eighth episode in this year’s “renewed” airing of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime series on the YouTube website earlier this week. This episode, “Sasa no Ha Rhapsody” (“Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody”), was the first episode that did not air during the original 2006 run. Kadokawa has been streaming each episode in Japanese one week after its broadcast since last month.
